APC, PDP, LP and NNPP: How Nigeria’s Four Major Parties Differ

The 2023 elections produced a new four-party landscape in Nigeria.

APC — All Progressives Congress

Formed in 2013 as a merger of four opposition parties, the APC has won three consecutive presidential elections. With 213 NASS seats and 20 governors it remains Nigeria’s most powerful party.

PDP — Peoples Democratic Party

Founded in 1998 and the ruling party from 1999 to 2015. It controls 12 governorships and 118 NASS seats. Its strongest base is in the South-South and parts of the North-East.

LP — Labour Party

Marginal until Peter Obi joined in 2022, LP won 38 NASS seats in 2023 — the best third-party result in Nigerian legislative history.

NNPP — New Nigeria Peoples Party

Essentially a vehicle for Kwankwaso’s movement, concentrated in Kano State. It won the Kano governorship and 22 NASS seats.
