Nigeria holds five distinct types of elections each with its own rules, constituencies, and requirements to win.
Presidential Election — 1 position
To win outright a candidate must receive the highest number of valid votes and at least 25 percent in no fewer than two-thirds of Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT. Nigeria has never had a presidential run-off.
Governorship Elections — 36 positions
Each state elects its governor for a four-year term. To win a candidate needs the highest votes plus 25 percent in at least two-thirds of the state’s local government areas.
Senate — 109 positions
Three senators from each of the 36 states and one from the FCT. Elected for four-year terms by simple majority.
Federal House of Representatives — 360 positions
Three hundred and sixty members representing constituencies distributed by population. Elected by simple majority for four-year terms.
State House of Assembly — 993 positions
Each state has a minimum of 24 members elected for four-year terms. The FCT has 6 Area Councils instead of a state assembly.
